Feline Hyperthyroidism (FHT) is often cited as the most common endocrinopathy in cats. Hyperthyroidism in cats is a life-threatening disease requiring prompt veterinary attention. The goals of therapy are to restore euthyroidism, avoid hypothyroidism and minimize side effects of treatment.
Recent publication of hyperthyroid treatment guidelines categorize patients into 5 groups, each of which requires a different approach to diagnosis. These guidelines will be reviewed, as well as, common comorbidities and their influence on treatment choices.
Webinar Objectives
- Understand the complex pathophysiology of thyroid hormone on multiple body systems and how it affects analysis of diagnostic testing and physical examination
- Integrate the new hyperthyroidism guidelines into practice protocols, diagnostic testing, and patient management
- Plan therapy for hyperthyroidism with an appreciation for the interrelationships of chronic kidney disease and heart disease in patients with these comorbidities
- Make specific therapeutic recommendations tailored to each patient with an understanding of the benefits and risks of each form and the critical importance of careful diagnostic testing continuity over time
Speaker Bios
Elizabeth Colleran, DVM, MS, DABVP (Feline)
Dr. Colleran is a feline specialist, board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, and teaches feline medicine around the world. She has successfully created, owned, and managed two feline medicine veterinary practices.
Dr. Colleran is a published author and frequent contributor to several peer-reviewed publications. She has been a media spokesperson on a number of feline topics for communications campaigns and has proudly mentored many aspiring feline practitioners.
Her next book for veterinarians, “The Senior Cat: Medicine and Management in the Golden Years,” (working title) will be published in 2020.
