Tips for a Practical Approach to Feline Pain Management

Cats have a pain pathway similar to that of all other mammals, making it impossible for cats to be immune from pain. Yet cats are highly likely to be undertreated for pain. This occurs due to a variety of reasons, including the cat's masterful ability to hide pain, the veterinarian's feeling that knowledge of analgesic drugs is sometimes inadequate, the veterinary team's need for defined roles in hospital-wide pain assessment/management strategies, and the client's lack of resources to understand and assess their cat's pain at home. All of these topics, along with some favorite drugs/analgesic protocols will be discussed in this webinar.
Webinar Objectives:
- Present a brief overview of pain and analgesia in cats and provide pain assessment and treatment resources for the veterinary team
- Emphasize the importance of pain management and discuss why cats are undertreated for pain when compared to dogs
- Review cat-specific pain assessment and pain scoring systems & provide tips for implementing pain scoring systems in practice
- Discuss a few favorite drugs/techniques for both acute & chronic pain therapy in cats
- Emphasize importance of client follow-up and provide pain assessment resources for the cat-owning client
